The brief asked for a museum and exhibition project that would explore both surf and sea and their role upon our leisure, science and ecology.

The building shape, derived from the spatial concept of “under the sky” and “under the sea”, creates a central gathering plaza open to the sky and focused toward the horizon, and takes full advantage of its seaside resort location.

This ”Place de l’Océan” with its concave “under the sky” shape, forms the character of the main exterior space, while the convex structural ceiling forms the “under the sea” exhibition spaces. The dynamic curved underside provides a surface upon which films and video
exhibitions will be projected, creating spaces enlivened by plays of light and images.

The building’s spatial qualities are first experienced in the entrance space where ramps pass along the dynamic curved surface on which filmed exhibitions are projected, animating the space with changing images and light.

On axis with the ocean, towards the west the site is slightly cupped on the edges, connecting the forms with the landscape while simultaneously concealing flanking parked cars. With its mix of fields and indigenous vegetation the natural landscape extends the museum facility and provides a site for festivals and daily events.

Toward the south, the facade forms a covered area with space for playing ping-pong and other indoor games and activities. During inclement weather, this covered area provides a sheltered space for outdoor interaction, meetings and events.
To illustrate the symbiosis between skateboarding and surfing, an empty concrete “skater’s pool” is located in the southwestern corner of the plaza.

Materials used in the plaza include a combination of small concrete stone-blocks similar to Portuguese paving cobblestones, grass and natural vegetation. White insulated glass, clear vision glass, and white concrete, with textured board form exposures, form the exterior of the buildings. Surfaces are covered with white plaster, according to the best surface criteria for video projection. A wood block floor softens the acoustics of the exhibition areas and allows for sub-floor wiring flexibilities.
